Ed,
Without getting my laptop behind your router and doing some forensics,
it'd be hard to determine where the problem lies. You might mention
what flavor, and SP of the operating system you're using as we've seen
several flavors of Windows cause some problems. XP after SP2 should be
good as should (heaven help me!) Vista. Win9x is questionable for
handling DNS rotations correctly. WinME is right out. Mac and the *nix
software should handle it correctly.
Most routers don't have enough memory to cache a lot of DNS lookups, so
that shouldn't be a problem. The exceptions tend to say "Cisco" on them
and are designed for ISP use. Some ISPs do attempt to limit such
lookups and do funny things to their bind installations either out of
ignorance or an intent to over-manage. There's little you could do save
point do an outside, non-caching DNS for all lookups.
For now, I suspect we'll call it "good" as you're reporting and reliably
hitting servers and getting your data into the system.
I want to echo my public congratulations to Philip on the Environmental
Hero award. He's well-deserving of it.
