My station is a Davis vantage pro II wireless.
I have at least 50 ft of open area around the mount made from 2" water pipe
10ft above the ground and 10 ft below ground filled with concrete and a 1/2"
bolt hole at the bottom and a 1/2" bolt hole at the top of the pipe.
I attached a 33" mast made from 20 ft 2" galvanized pipe and the rest of the
length is joined to 1.5 pipe with a reducer for a mast of 33ft.
The anemometer is at 33ft per the recommendation of the weather service
books for airport self reporting stations. The instrument package is 5 ft
above the ground mounted per the instructions in the Davis glide.
I took the dement ions used for a screen used in a ground mounted rain gage
to reduce error from the wind. Fabricated one from Alum and instead of
three legs in the ground, I made a spoke with 4 spokes that go from the
outer ring to the 2" pipe adjusted as if it was on the ground.
Works great and using an 8" brass rain gage as a standard, well within Davis
documentation even with the wind blowing. Midas records show 97% and better
at times for my readings with this setup.
The main mast is drilled to first mount at the top of the ground mounted
mounting pipe. Then the pipe is raised and the second bolt goes through the
second hole in the raised mast. You then place 3 guys from the reducer on
the instrument pipe to screw in ground anchors to support the mast in strong
winds. Mine has survived 65 MPH gusts with 50MPH steady winds.
This is how I skinned the cat to keep the wind from blowing rain from the
gage. I also may mention my unit has a fan running 24hrs moving air through
the bottom stack.
