[wxqc] Rain measurements with high wind.

I have seen the same, often. I live in a windy location. I think the
funnel-shaped buckets are more prone to this as they allow the wind to
“scoop” the water back out. The solution may be to put a tube of equal
diameter over the top of the funnel opening to act more like a bucket. If it
has an equal diameter to the top of the funnel, it shouldn’t effect reading
other than better containing the water.

>From what I've seen, it's certainly possible for the wind to blow rain past
the opening, or a torrential rain to overwhelm the gauge. My suggestion is
to get a good standard rain gauge and place it beside your current gauge and
compare the readings. That is how mine is set up. So far, they've been
pretty close.

You can purchase a rain gauge that will hold up to 11 inches of rain (it
certainly will not be overwhelmed!) here: HYPERLINK

This area, south of Kansas City, just had a significant rain and wins event.

I only recorded .79 inches during this storm. I am certain that much more
rain fell based on fields, roads, and buckets.

I suspect that the wind actually blew most of the rain moisture over the top

of the rain gauge opening.

Has any one else experience anything like this and does any one have a
solution to this phenomenon.
