[wxqc] wxqc Digest, Vol 42, Issue 13

I live 3.5 miles from O'Hare Airport and I have a Davis Vantage Pro 2 installed at my house. My data is always in line with KORD, but sometimes MADIS reports errors in my data. I long ago gave up on relying on MADIS. O'Hare is the official weather site for Chicago and my numbers are always equal to KORD, so if I were you I wouldn't worry too much about MADIS stations.

Lew,
It's not uncommon for me to get 2 green thumbs and a red X for humidity,
but I'm in a different microclimate than my surrounding stations.
The QC checks are an indicator to aid in evaluation. If you're passing
MADIS checks, your data are getting used by a lot of folks.

It's possible, that's why you should check against another
instrument to see if your readings are believed to be correct.
Rather than trying to chase the MADIS analysis, if you have
made an effort to confirm your data, stick to it.

If you have a Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2 with a USB data logger,
Silicon Labs has updated their CP2101 USB to UART device driver last
year. I believe this is included in the WeatherLink 5.8.x update for
Windows systems.
The new Silicon Labs driver is supposed to correct problems on systems
running Mac OS X 10.5.2. It appears to work on the PowerMac platforms
but causes a kernel panic when used on a Intel-based Mac Pro (2008).
Adding ferrite cores to your USB cable to reduce RFI and EMI is, also,
reported to help but not on a Intel-based Mac Pro (2008). :(

I have to adjust all of the time. I was told by another user that I
need to "lie" about my altitude to get the barometer to track
properly. Has anyone else done this?

Well....Skywarn people don't necessarily have a weather
station...they would observe tornadoes, etc....but would a Skywarn
person typically have the ability to set up a weather station at an
event location? I have been checking into Skywarn and they care more
about you having a ham license than a weather station.
As far as COOP...is a COOP person going to de-install his NWS
provided weather station and move it for a weekend or week long event
and "abandon" his home location? I don't think the typical COOP
person is going to have a "spare" system to temporarily set up at
some other location.
It just happens my weather station is a half mile from the event
location, certainly enough to have comparable weather conditions not
requiring moving my weather station to give them accurate weather
information for the show location.
I first thought they meant a Skywarn type person to "warn" them of
impending bad weather so they could close things up before bad
weather hit. It seems for insurance purposes they aren't trying to
protect the people, but just validate there was bad weather, i.e. too
cold, it snowed, it rained, or the wind blew too hard, any condition
that would reduce attendance or close the event down for X hours or days.
In fact, they set the rates based on how much rain there would have
to be to file a complain. For instance, you could say you would
tolerate .2" of rain but if more then that you would want to file a claim.
The weather observers that are hired are sent to the site to observe
the wind, snow, rain, tornado or whatever would disrupt the
event. The other option is to get the data from a closeby NWS
station. In this case the closest NWS station is further than they
allow for weather validation. They didn't say anything about
accepting ASOS or AWOS station data as there is an AWOS station about
3 miles away.
Thanks,
Lew

I have the same issue with Dew Point, I checked the local airport and they
have the same issue on their report. I thought I was doing great to match
the high dollar unit. The explanation was great, go with the two thumbs up
being green and sleep well at night..Jim CW5302

I have been trying to get my information correct to get the best
possible MADIS reading. Seems my barometer just doesn't want to
cooperate. Until today it said it failed a consistency test but now
it doesn't say that, but I only get one thumbs up although my graph
and the analysis line are practically one and the same.
Also have a question about my temperature reading. It says if there
is a positive reading my temperature reading is lower than
expected. If I have a FARS and none of the stations around me have
one, wouldn't my readings be consistently cooler? Wouldn't that mean
my information is more accurate and they should be deviated, not
me? I know MADIS doesn't factor in which units are properly sited at
5' above ground with FARS vs. stations mounted at other heights without
FARS.
The local AWOS station has had a temperature error of about 4 degrees
for a long time and they haven't corrected it even though I reported
it straight to the FAA technicians responsible for the station. It
is amazing their temperature analysis gives them 2 thumbs up when
they have had up to almost seven degrees of error. Kind of bizarre
to get two thumbs up and a big red "X"???
http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/KLVN
What do I need to do to get two thumbs on my barometer?
Here is a link to my data:

My system was constantly crashing running WeatherLink 5.7.x. I updated to
5.8.x and the latest firmware about a month and a half ago. I'm using a USB
data logger. The system did not crash after that until last weekend when
the server was having issues. It seems as if quiet a few WeatherLink users
crashed that weekend. The problem may not be with WeatherLink.
