Lauderdale. We had a tornado warning and I was in the path of the track on radar. I saw no sign of a funnel but the rain was so heavy I could not see in the direction it was coming from but the wind was NW at 35mph and straight line just behind the shelf cloud . However look at my barometer graph on findu ( CWOP Call w4ake ) that shows a near vertical drop followed quickly by near vertical rise in pressure. This was followed by several hail shafts with pea sized hail followed by large Hail that looked like a snowstorm because the stones floated down. I got some on the porch and found them to be flat like silver dollars 1.5in in Dia. others floating by looked even bigger. Strange!! I reported them to NWS MIA and we settled on calling them golf-ball size. All the best : Dick Long w4ake -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... WFOs are >providing Skywarn training right now; sign-up through their web page >for the next "spotter" course in your community. Dave brings up an interesting subject about SkyWarn. I have sponsored meeting locations in my area for SkyWarn training over the years and I have been an active 'spotter' for many years. Most NWS regional offices have Weather Spotter Hotlines. The number is restricted to 'trained observers' relaying weather information to the NWS. Observations by spotters follow a strict criteria established by the NWS. During WX events they get hammered with a lot of calls that don't usually even get recorded or logged. Criteria training for reporting is a must. Example, they need to know hail size greater than pea-size. whether funnel clouds or tornado's have touched the ground. And in our area life-threatening events, and visibility less than a quarter mile during blowing dust and sand. The desert can produce some very interesting WX events that effect motorists, wash flooding, lightning, etc. We have a very large group of 'Storm Chasers' that belong to our area SkyWarn Chapter. Being ham radio operators, our mobile units can get very complex with communications and computers that display real-time radar images. Mobile units generally send out real-time position reports for tracking purposes. Our NWS office has this tracking ability which gives them exact locations as we 'storm chase'. The region office has licensed amateur radio operators as part of their NWS staff. They really need to know what we see with our eyes as spotters, in terms they can relate to. So, if you have the time... look into joining your local group of SkyWarn spotters. It's well worth the adventure and you will be a very valuable asset to your community. To: "'Discussion of weather data quality issues'" > Message-ID: <01fd01c75aae$ee812980$900ac80a at SoftWx1> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Chris, CWOP expects altimeter, so I would guess that's what's used for QC. The Vantage Pro console calculates the sea level pressure (SLP) internally from the raw sensor pressure. That SLP value is displayed on the console, and is also sent to connected weather programs via the data logger. So, you will be sending SLP unless the weather program sending to CWOP calculates the altimeter from the provided SLP value (this involves reversing the SLP calculation to find out the raw sensor pressure, and then calculating the altimeter value from that). The following programs are the only ones I know of that currently do this: WeatherLink (latest version) VPLive WeatherDisplay (must turn on the option to send altimeter) PC-WeatherStation (must turn on the option to send altimeter) I'm not aware of any other programs that correctly calculate and send altimeter for VP weather stations. Unless you are near sea level elevation, this can cause problems, because SLP and altimeter are not the same. In particular, temperature is part of the SLP algorithm, so compared to altimeter, the SLP will drift up and down with the seasons as the daily avg temperature changes, and also during weather events with high temperature swings. After developing the source code for converting VP's SLP to altimeter, I wrote to all the weather software authors offering free use of the code hoping it would help CWOP data quality since a large number of stations are VP. WeatherDisplay and PC-WeatherStation fairly quickly incorporated the change. The others apparently weren't interested. Regarding comparing your barometer to NWS stations, it doesn't really matter if your elevation and the NWS station are at different elevations because altimeter already takes elevation into account. What is more important is that the station be as close as possible as the crow flies. Steve SoftWx _____ From: Chris Topf [mailto:topfcd at yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 10:22 AM To: wxqc Subject: [wxqc] what barometer reading is MADIS qc'ing against? I have a problem with the MADIS qc checks on my barometer: http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/C3603?tile=0 As you can see, it shows I'm consistently 1.5 to almost 2 mb higher than the 'analysis'. I've always tried to gauge the accuracy of my station to the NWS at Pittsburgh, particularly when it comes to pressure and temperature. Our elevations, oddly enough, are within a meter or two of each other even though we are some 20-30 miles apart. Since barometer is primarily a function of temperature and altitude, I can directly compare my bar to it's bar. So my main question is this, what pressure (altimeter versus sea level pressure) does MADIS use in it's qc? Another question is, what pressure is reported to CWOP? If I look at 0Z on 2/27, the pressure listed in the CWOP weather data table for my station was 1011.1 mb and the corresponding pressure for KPIT was 1009.9 for the altimeter and 1011.7 for the sea level pressure. If I need to adjust my barometer, I will but I want to understand what I'm updating. Also, the pressure on the VP2 console at home, is it the same value reported to CWOP? My station is at home and I'm at work so I can't, right now. see what's being reported to CWOP and what's displayed on the console. Thanks for anyone who can help. This doesn't happen to everyone with a USB data logger, but it happens to more than a few. I added an option to VPLive (and VirtualVP) to automatically reset the device driver when it detects that the data flow has stopped. I don't know of other programs that go this far to resurrect the connection, so in those cases when the driver fails, the only other option to fix it is to unplug and then plug back in the USB cable, or reboot the computer. I guess the KNXX's anomalously high temperature is causing the analysis RH to be erroroneously too low. Bad Navy Aerographers! The observer must have been sipping the groge during sling psychrometer class. Actually, the base is getting BRAC's and services outsourced. Maybe you can gove a call to the base operator and ask for the weather station to alert them of the problem? Answering your question, MADIS staff can remove a station from the analysis if it is non-CWOP, or we can play data police (as I was recently accused of) and put a CWOP station on the "unvalidated" list if repairs are not planned. Putting active CWOP stations on the inactive list of done as a last result. Message-ID: <441919.88793.qm@web55215.mail.re4.yahoo.com> I run a check against my WX station on a very regular basis by comparing close by stations and also running the WX station page. The last 2 or 3 days at http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/AS132 has been reporting that the dewpoint is too high by some 2.7F This is the first time i have seen this happen in about 18 months of operation. When I check other stations in the area they report very similar data but do not get a Red Cross for the same variable! I have a Davis Vantage Pro2 (wireless) and do not seem able to lower the Dewpoint reading. Do I need to lower the Hum Out reading? My location is in the open, not under a tree or near the house. Should I not sweat the "small stuff" and wait and see if it corrects its self or is there a better option to make this adjustment ? Thanks in advance! If you change the analysis period to the last two weeks, then you get a green check. Interestingly, your closest cwop neighbor -- C7069 has the wrong elevation configured -- a feet versus meters problem. This certainly will not help with your analysis values! Calibrating humidity is always tricky -- the real way is to get a sling psychrometer (the wet bulb/dry bulb thermometer pair) and use that. I got one from Ebay for around $20. As for CWOP, I would not think that DST is an issue since we insert a UTC time stamp on all received (real-time) reports (the reason we only accept real-time, and no retrospective, observations). As for application and PC stability, not being on the actual local time should not be a problem. However, everyone should be downloading the latest Windows OS (and Mac and Linux/Unix) patches so your operating system automatically switches to the correct local time and more importantly, has the latest security patches. I think WeatherLink 5.7.1 is a great upgrade in support for CWOP, including the additional precip parameters (1hr and 24 hr accumulated rainfall) and the server upload default, rotate.aprs.net. The rainfall parameters will allow MADIS and MesoWest to use WeatherLink reported precip for the first time (they could not use the "since midnight" type rainfall parameter). If a couple brave WeatherLink users could do a 1 week stability burn-in test for the group and report back to us on your experience, that would be greatly appreciated. Only one application can run at a time as they compete for the COM port. If you want to run VWS, you do not need to load the WeatherLink software. All you need is the little WeatherLink hardware connector and you are toss the WeatherLink CD-ROM. Don't forget to load the latest version of VWSAPRS too. I'm not worried, looks like this was an example of how weather can be very different over even a small area and fiqured I'd share it as an example of how sometimes even simple things can effect ones QC. There are two drivers for this device, one in the list of COM ports, the other under USB. Once uninstalled, install the new drivers provided with the new release of WL, reboot the PC and you should be good to go. I have used these devices before in other projects, and the devices reset just fine through USB commands, so it is unlikely that you have to "reboot" the console. Take a look in the device manager to make sure there is a COM port using the CP2012(?) (I can never remember the part number), if not, the drivers are messed up, and you will need to look into why. Sometimes a boot into safe mode and go into Device Manager will provide more insight. -Mark _____ From: wxqc-bounces at lists.gladstonefamily.net [mailto:wxqc-bounces at lists.gladstonefamily.net] On Behalf Of Eleanor Linkkila Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2007 6:27 AM To: Discussion of weather data quality issues Subject: Re: [wxqc] Unable to communicate I tried to control alt del to see if anything else was running but doesn't appear so. It was interesting to read that you can rent the firmware updater from Davis. I was reading your reply to Gary, W2CS, and compared my raw data to his. I notice that there are 3 periods (...) between g and t in my report, but Gary's has numerical data. Is something set incorrectly in my upload? Do you have to select any parameters after the 5.7.1 upgrade to include the new data, or is it automatic? Nice to be part of this list. I find a lot of interesting information.
