Howdy, Harry,
I can't speak to the SuSE distribution as it's one that I've never spent
much time with. We've a high perf. computation cluster in my lab but I
don't administer it (anymore) and just use it. I do my own
administration in my office and at home... or at least they still let me
think I do... and we use CentOS as our OS distro of choice We can
debate that later.
I use wview for my station, which isn't a Davis system. That said, wview
(http://www.wviewweather.com/) started out supporting the Davis VP2/2+
and has now added the Vaisala WXT-510 to its list in support of my
needs. I've run it with both a regular desktop and a dedicated
micro-server (Linksys NSLU-2).
If you google for "davis vp2 linux" you'll also come across
WeatherDisplay. I played with it and didn't like it quite as much as
wview, but it certainly has a loyal fanclub
I suspect you'll find SuSE will do well for you. There's as many
preferences in distro as there are sands on the beach... and every user
has a preference or two!
Let me know if I can help along the way!

Right now I'm running a Dell P3, loaded with XP. I recently bought a new Dell 521 and enhanced it as well but without an operating system. I purchased a copy of SUSE Linux to install and have another copy of XP that I could install on the new puter.
