actually,. the tower's surface area DOES contribute to the wind load of
the tower/antenna (or supported object) system. Here are a couple of
links to help understand this:

ARRL article "Tower and Antenna Wind Loading as a Function of
Height" (11 pages)
        http://www.arrl.org/qex/1123.pdf

online forum discussion of "Tower Wind Loads"

white paper "Towers and Wind Load"

Had a real nasty front come thru here (north central CT) last night ...
wind for yesterday averaged 3+ mph ... when the front arrived, had gusts
of nearly 30mph. other areas of the state had lots of trees down, i'm
in a somewhat protected location. had 1/2" of rain in about an hour or
so. for a couple of minutes, was coming down at rate of over 2"/hr.
luckily, that was for some very short bursts. nearby lightning strike
knocked my wx PC offline and i didn't notice it for about 2 hrs ... t'is
too bad. would have been some neat graphs on FindU/MesoWest. :(

local forecasters are saying a repeat is likely this afternoon. hope i
stay online this time. :)
