This problem IS a windows XP update" issue. I have this problem only after I
downloaded an update once. I use Zone alarm and set it to show all activity
once and it say windows.... is trying to modify an driver, would you like to
allow this? Every time I would say yes, The mouse pointer would "have a
mind" of it's own. So I always say NO and never have this problem. At least
this is what occurs on my system. And it will happen on another if I use the
Ultimeter 2100 on that one, unless I say NO.
Just my experience,(sorry for pun). So far I do not have this issue with
Vista And vista is a picky OS.

But a USB mouse has a specific descriptor that says "I'm a mouse"
as opposed to other devices.
The problems arise, at least in the past, where the 'serial' mouse
driver enables the port, then starts doing things with control and
status lines or Tx/Rx data on a serial port, no matter if that serial
port is USB or direct, and what's attached to that port starts
doing things back.
However, I think what you're referring to may be related to the
fact that some 'BIOS' setups will try to 'legacy enable' USB
devices so as to allow USB keyboards and mice to work at boot,
even if the boot is to DOS, or in the most extreme case, just to a
BIOS setup routine.
