[wxqc] Davis Vantage Pro2 Question

Dr. Lee,

Respectfully, as a NWS meteorologist, I can assure you that this is not
what is required for NWS data submission. I found your last two posts to
be both rude and condescending, especially when considering the great
efforts (time and money) spent by folks to provide us and many others
with such valuable data. I'm not sure what kind of "doctor" talks to
people in that manner, but I would at least hope that someone with such
an education would know how to spell vane (not vain) and instruments
(not interments).

What IS required is that sites make their best effort to set up their
weather stations within the siting guidelines. Mr. Geilla's intentions
fall well within these guidelines. These are generally home weather
stations, not commercial outfits on airport properties with the luxury
of having a powered 10m pole available for use. Neighborhood covenants,
building restrictions and the unsightly look of a 10m pole are just a
few reasons why instrumentation is usually NOT co-located in the
vertical. In most instances, the temperature/dewpoint and rain gauge are
located together, separately from the anemometer which often times is
attached to the roof of a house.

Mr. Geilla's approach is not only WELL within the guidelines
established, but better than the overwhelming majority of sitings that
I've seen. 100 feet horizontal separation of the anemometer will have
zero effect on data quality because of the absence of obstructions at
that altitude within the free wind. The changes of 10m wind direction
and speed typically occur on a scale of tens of miles, not feet.
