[wxqc] Davis Vantage Pro2 Question

Thomas
I don't have a Davis system but my Peet Bros uses Telco jack technology
extensively. I have extended my cabling successfully using "outdoor" 8
conductor cat 5 Telco wire which gives you 1 spare pair, and adding RJ 11
plugs to each end making sure the cabling is straight i.e. connector 1 to
connector 1. something you should be aware of is that some Telco female to
female connectors have the wires crossed i.e. connector 1 to connector 8,
this can be a source of trouble. I obtained my crimp tool in the Telco
section of Home Depot. Radio Shack may also be a source of the crimp tool,
just make sure it will do a RJ 11 (6 conductor) or RJ 45 (8 conductor).
Silicone Dielectric grease works good as a moisture barrier.

Subject: [wxqc] Davis Vantage Pro2 Question

  Hello To All,

  I'm new to the eGroup.

I just purchased a Davis Vantage Pro2 with the optional fan aspirated
temperature/humidty shelter. As all know the Pro2 has the integrated sensor
suite (ISS) with wind vane/anemometer attached. You can run the included
cable of 40 feet between the ISS and anemometer/wind vane unit and add cable
extensions of up to 540 feet.

For better wind data accuracy I need to detach the anemometer/wind vane
from the ISS and place it at 35 feet up on a mast, further away than the 40
foot included extension cable.

I have aquestion. Is the 40 foot extension cable a regular telephone type
cable with male connectors on each end? In other words can I buy regular
telephone cable extensions at Wal Mart or Home Depot to use between the ISS
and anemometer/wind vane? Or do I have to buy the Davis (overpriced in my
opinion) cables?

Next month I'm buying the model #6332 wireless version of the wind
vane/anemometer and the cable thing will not be an issue.
