I wish to thank all the folks that responded to my question of grounding my
antenna mast. The varied responses were both interesting & informative. They
also created new questions.
>From those recommending grounding, I ask...
- what size wire would you suggest? #8 solid copper? (a straight run is
about 35 ft., mast to ground rod).
- do you think its ok to put the ground wire, TV antenna coax & anemometer
cable (if I decided to use it) in PVC conduit? As I have grey siding I
thought the grey PVC would be more eye appealing then individual wires
flopping in the wind. I would terminate the conduit just above ground level,
then feed the ground wire to the ground rod and the antenna, anemometer
wires through lightning arrestors (also grounded to the rod) before entering
the building.
- what's a good way to fasten the cable to the shingled roof?
>From those that mention NEC and/or NFPA do you have a section or article
number to help me refer to that information.
Dave, was the PVC extension sturdy enough in the wind? From my experience
the PVC conduit is not very rigid, a 10 ft length held horizontally would
droop a couple feet. What size did you use? How did you couple the PVC to
the Iron, did you find a size combination where one would fit inside the
other?
My original thinking was that the GROUNDED mast would just ATTRACT lighting.
Again I wish to thank those that offer the theory that it helps reduce
lightning by bleeding off the static buildup in the air around it.
I may also add guy wires to the extended mast & I'm not familiar with
effective but attractive ways to anchor them and the wires to the roof. So
any tips or links to How-to articles would be appreciated.
I,m also in need of a parts source for antenna mast, guy wire, attaching
hardware, lightning arrestors (coax & 4 wire Telco) etc. My usual sources
for electronic parts, Radio Shack and mcminone.com left a lot to be desired.
