It is very easy to script such a thing, which is why no one has a
formal program to do it. Simply "ping" the server, if you get no
echo, then sed the named config file and restart the named server.
Perhaps 5 lines for each server you want to monitor.
As to the 24 hour delay, this would only be the case if the timeout
for the name is set to 24 hours. It does take 24 hours for a new
domain name to circulate through the name system, maybe that is what
he is thinking of, but the length of time a name->IP resolution is
cached is set in the config file for a domain. I use 600 seconds for
findU to minimize the trauma if one server goes down. This does
increase the load on the name server, but it is a low overhead
protocol. It might hurt if cnn.com did it, but for something like
findU or CWOP it is no problem.
