I believe the Davis manual and spec sheets all describe the nature of the
humidity sensor (as well as its accuracy tolerances). The VP definitely
measures the humidity and calculates dew point from actual temperature and
humidity readings.

Some of the commercial sensors actually measure RH directly using an IC
sensor. This is then converted to dewpoint using the standard formula (given
temperature).
